Granite Games 2016 - Part Deux (The Good, The Sore, The Ugly)

Last week I dove deep into the topic of preparation and some experiences I had from the Granite Games last year. Naturally, this week I will touch on this year’s Granite Games and some personal thoughts on the good, the sore, and the soon to be ugly. For each section I will highlight one of the workouts that I feel best suits the theme.

THE GOOD:

The anticipation of the release of the workouts had all the competitors speculating for weeks.

Scouring social media for hints, trying to figure out what we didn’t do last year they would include this year, and what in the heck were they having us do on the football field? Last week they finally released all (but one) of the workouts and at first glance it’s always the same thought for me.

“Oh that looks fun….. we will probably do well in that…….well that part could be hard…….can we handle that weight……ok we will get time capped.”

However, after a couple practices we feel we have the best strategy we can for all nine workouts. Lastly, we obviously love the workout part but some of the best memories will be made outside the performance floor. Hanging out with friends at the hotel while we stuff our faces with as much food as we can while listening to whatever one liners we can come up with is something we will definitely cherish and being on an team with two awesome dudes.

Workout I like: ROW JUMP SQUAT

80 Cal Row

40 Box Jump Overs

20 Overhead Squats (155)

THE SORE:

NINE workouts over three days. I mean, kinda all I got on this one.

Workout to push me over the edge: NINE LIVES or SQUAT CLEAN AND JERK

NINE LIVES:

9 rounds

12 hang snatches (115)

12 Toes to Bar

Squat Clean and Jerk

Athlete 1: 20 Squat Clean and Jerks (135) ßME

Athlete 2: 15 Squat Clean and Jerks (155)

Athlete 3: 10 Squat Clean and Jerks (175)

THE UGLY:

There had to be one workout or lift that I absolutely hate or that I am just not good at and of course a movement popped up. Before last week I don’t think I had even attempted this movement before but I already knew it would be a struggle because of my lack of mobility. So this week the movement I have practiced more than anything else is the awkward dumbbell squat snatch. The first time I gave this one a shot went, well let’s say, disastrous. As time has gone on I have got more comfortable but in the heat of the competition who knows how I will end up. Considering they are part of a workout that looks like this:

DOUBLE BELL:

200 Double Unders

60 Dumbbell Squat Snatches

150 Double Unders

50 Dumbbell Squat snatches

125 Double Unders

40 Dumbbell Squat Snatches

100 Double Unders

So that’s my weekend in a nutshell! Feeling excited, nervous and like I already want to go to bed but looking forward to seeing all the other incredible athletes do their thing!! Don’t worry, you will get a recap next week of how all of the above went!

This is what nine workouts over three days looks like.
