There's really no such thing as an Average Joe.
There are many clichés out there to describe a group of people or just a single person. Naturally we tend to lump people into groups which, in the end, is over fairly trivial aspects.
Height, weight, income, how new a person’s car is, how many kids and/or dogs they have, or how many islands a person owns. When we first started this company, it was more behind the idea that the three to four of us - and our friends wanted to vacation with each other. We didn't care about the trivial aspects of where we were in society, how good of an athlete we were, or how much money we had.
We just wanted to go to awesome places and do incredible activities while we were there.
VoyEdge RX was born out of the idea that we needed 'experiences over material goods.' And that the benefits of travel far outweighed anything that may cause us to hesitate getting out of our comfort zones.
And the underlying theme with VoyEdge has always been that we wanted to go places and explore them, but also stay active and workout while we were there. What's the point of traveling if you're not getting out of your comfort zone?
Vacation to us - was never to sit on a beach and drink our faces off. It was more about experiencing as much as we could, staying fit - and rewarding ourselves after we conquered a destination.
Now, we know every active person out there goes on vacation once in a while - and chances are you scope out your own gyms, drop into a box and book a number of adventure activities for you to do while you're there. It's fun, we've all done it, but with the vast majority of our group having experience in the adventure travel and tourism industries, we think there's a lot of room for improvement, which is again, why we created VoyEdge RX.
At the end of the day, we want to be in the business of expanding the human connection with other athletes and travelers. We want people to meet other people from all walks of life on our trips. You won't get the same experience twice on a VoyEdge RX trip. There's always going to be new people, new things to explore, new friends to make and I think the 'Experience' aspect of travel is why people do it. We don't just want CrossFitters on our trip, we want everyone who's willing to take a leap of faith and travel with a group of strangers for the experience.
Where I’m going with this is that there is a term people throw around a lot which is “average Joe’s” to describe people who do their thing to make it by. I really do not like this term for a couple reasons.
Number one is because to me there is no such thing as just an average or typical person. At the end of the day we are about survival and there is nothing average about doing what you have to do in order to survive. It takes hard work, it takes will, and it takes the people and experiences around us to keep us going. We strive to have something to look forward to, whether that is having 23 beers on a Friday night or hitting the hay at 7:30pm after reading your favorite book cover to cover for the 12th time. Everybody in the world is a bit different and that is what makes it a phenomenal place. Close your eyes and imagine if everyone was like you. To me that vision is pretty darn boring.
Now, you’re probably wondering what the heck does this have to do with going on a trip and doing a couple workouts? I know it is a stretch, but it goes back to the survival part and needing to have experiences in life that make it fun, exciting, and perhaps open some new doors you didn’t even know were there. We believe that cutting off a bit from the world and taking in a different place with some new people is a form of rejuvenation that can stick in your memories for the rest of your life.
For us at VoyEdge RX, life is more about the experiences and whom you share them with, rather than how much money you have, what kind of car you drive or what you do for a day job. It's going to be the little things like standing with a small group atop the Austrian Alps and that will have you going, "Wow. I didn't think I'd ever be here..." Or when you take a leap of faith and stand on top of the table at Oktoberfest to chug the rest of your beer in front of 10,000 screaming Bavarians...it's the little things, in strange places that keep us smiling years after the fact. And we want to be right there, cheering you on every step of the way.
That's what VoyEdge RX is about. And the point I'm trying to make is, no matter how much we all might feel like Average Joe's or Jane's, there's nothing average about you. You are your own person with a vast wealth of knowledge and experiences and we want you to come travel with us. We want you to come experience the world with us.
Because at the end of the day, you're going to remember the things you accomplished, not the things you wished you did.
Truth be told, the hardest part is saying, "Ok, I'll do it." And we understand that. For many of our team members, it was hard to say, 'Ok, I guess I'll move to Italy and work with total strangers at this company I've never really heard of,' but we all took that shot.
We all left our comfort zones at one point or another - and maybe I speak for the whole team here, but it was the best damn decision we could have ever made. Because once we took that leap, we never looked back.
VoyEdge RX is not in the business of attracting those top of the line athletes (I mean if you’re reading this and have been to the Games once of four times we would definitely love for you to hop on a trip) because this for those athletes just like us. Regular, hard-working people who simply like traveling and working out. I'm hesitant to use the word, "Average Joe's" but you get the point.
The ones who work 9-5. The ones with three kids. The ones who work out one to six times a week. This is what we are here for. And always remember, nothing about you is average.
