7 Travel Photo Tips To Take Your Feed To The Next Level
Looking for some tips on getting that perfect image on your next trip? We got you covered!
1. Use Your Smartphone
Believe it or not, you don’t need a fancy camera! People always assume you need the best of the best when it comes to documenting your travels, but that’s simply not the case. Having a DSLR can be great, but if you’re keeping it light, your smartphone or even a GoPro can do the trick! Using apps like Snapseed, VSCOcam, and Enlight can enhance your photography by editing like a pro.
2. Plan
If you’re going on a weekend trip to a destination and want to snag that awesome photo that will summarize your time there, plan it out! By always looking up the destination and seeing if there is any signature landmark or special event happening in the area, you can be well prepared. At the same time, be flexible. You may have a set plan on where/what to photograph, but I’ve encountered locals many times who offer an even greater idea to spend my time - usually resulting in a better experience and a better photo!
3. Get Low
The beauty of using a smaller camera like your smartphone or a GoPro means that the lens can get closer to the ground. Some of my favorite images are those using a puddle to reflect the scene! It helps add that little bit of uniqueness to a photo that you can call your own.
4. Don’t Hit Snooze
Push yourself to get up in the morning and take that epic sunrise photo! Let’s face it, you may be in a certain destination for only a few days, why not get the most out of it? Wake up, hike to that panoramic view if needed, and get the shot. You’ll feel more satisfied when you think back on your experience.
5. Climb
Tying into tip number 4, getting above the place you’re in for that spectacular view is more than worth it! It’s usually only a few dollars to climb a bell tower or tall landmark for some insta-worthy shots.
6. Golden Hour
Photography is all about lighting, there’s a reason photos are more beautiful during the “Golden Hour”. This is the time right before sunset (and right after sunrise) that offers soft, golden light. Taking photos under the midday sun can result in harsh shadows on your subject. Not sure where the sun sets and rises? Use the app Sky Guide. With this app, you can put your phone up to the sky and fast forward using its features to see exactly what position the sun will be in the sky at a certain time!
7. Have Fun
Sure, this may be obvious, but don’t forget to actually experience the moment instead of just photographing it. Way too many people get focused on the process of taking photos and fail to appreciate where they are. Countless times, you’ll see tourists snap photos of a popular attraction and immediately move on to the next one. Don’t be that person!
